My wife and I live in Florida. We just bought a house, went out to City Furniture to get a full bedroom set, a mattress, and a breakfast table with 4 chairs for a total of about $6500. We told the guy we would give him $5500 right then and there and he flat out said "no.. we do not bargain" and we walked. It wasn't like ANY other people were buying in there. Am I crazy for trying to bargain??

Large chain stores don't bargain. They're big corporations and the individuals working there don't have any authority to alter prices on their own. If you want to bargain, you'll have to go to a small "mom & pop" type of furniture store where the owner is available to negotiate with you. Good luck.

Yes, you can bargain with furniture chains and no, you're not crazy. In fact, you should always attempt to bargain on large-dollar purchases. First, it never hurts to ask. Second, you never know what you might get for asking. My husband and I bought several rooms of furniture a couple of years ago and made our purchases at two chains, Mor and Room Store. We made deals at both. In one purchase, we offered cash today in exchange for a discount and they agreed to take off 5%. In the second, we received one very, large picture and a mirror thrown in to the deal plus free delivery. Just don't be afraid to walk and the previous poster is right - leave your contact info and wait a day or two.
